Translation of the Spanish Definition of Proximity Marketing (Wikipedia)
“Proximity marketing consists of broadcasting interesting information or advertising content using messages, multimedia, applications, images, text and/or music to any Bluetooth-enabled mobile device. Transmissions will be received by all the users within a radius of between 3 and 100 metres approximately.”
In short, mobility solutions consist of sending a short “message” (or “content”) to a receiver’s mobile device using a broadcasting system. If the message contains advertising information, it is called mobile marketing. If the broadcasting system used is Bluetooth, we would be talking about proximity marketing.
The most popular mobile device to send either advertising or information messages to is by far the mobile telephone, due its widespread use today. However, there is not a single standard model. Instead, we have a large variety of models of different mobile telephones with different functions (connectivity, camera, GPS…), interfaces (touch screens, QWERTY keypads, number keypads, joystick…), operating system (Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android…), etc.
In reference to the message itself, it must be interpreted by the receiving mobile device. As a result, there are certain types of content that can be classified as follows:
- text (a simple SMS)
- images (in different formats, MMS)
- audio (polytones, MP3, etc.)
- video
- direct access to a WAP portal)
- mobile applications
As regards broadcasting systems, messages can currently be sent to mobile telephones mainly using SMS messages, the Internet and Bluetooth systems.
